Defense is a very important part of the game. Great defense leads to easy points so it's important you know what to do to practice your defense. One tip is too watch some great defensive players play D. Gary Payton, Allen Iverson, And Alonzo Mourning(for the big men) are great too watch. The first thing you must master is the defensive position. You must stay low, very low. Keep your eyes on the offensive players abdomen and keep up with the player. Quickness is very important for defense and so is footwork. There are a few drills to practice your defensive skills. I will put all of these drills in "The Killer Defensive Workout" listed at the bottom of this page. The Killer workout is also great for conditioning. Defensive Slides: Get in the lane and slide from one side of the lane to the other. Stay as low as you can while maintaining good defensive position. It is very important that you do NOT cross your feet. Holding the Defensive Position: An extremely hard drill, but it must be mastered for great defensive abilites. At first this drill will most likely be very hard for you. Get low in the defensive position and hold it there for the time stated in the Killer Defensive Workout. Do not rise up or rest your hands on your knees. The pain will come but try to overcome it. Fire Feet: Another very hard Drill. Get low in the defensive position and rapidly stutter your feet as fast as you can. Once again stay low and do not rest your hands on your knees. Stay on your toes when stuttering.

Killer Defensive Workout... Hold the Defensive Position for 2 minutes. Immediately go into fire feet for 1 minute. Then go into defensive slides for 1 minute. Hold the Defensive position for 2 minutes. Fire Feet for 30 seconds. Next you start at the baseline on the far right corner. Do A Defensive slide to the left corner. Sprint To half Court, defensive slide to right part of half court, sprint to the right baseline, defensive slide to the left baseline. You do not rest after each drill, immediately go into the next drill. This does not look hard but in fact is unbelievabely hard. Do this workout through one time. It is great for conditioning before the season! | |

Notice How Payton is stairing at Marbury's abdomen. The offensive player can't go anywhere without his abdomen, so follow it! |
